Tiny origami

Ty has been making these cards for the exhibit. It is a standard size business card, with a gelatin capsule glued to it containing an origami crane that was folded from a one centimeter sheet of paper. There is a sample of the one centimeter paper at the top.

Believe it or not this crane is more than double the size of the crane he has in the exhibit. He folded that one from a 3 mm sheet of paper.

  1. Good grief! I can't imagine doing that at 13... he must be such a focused kid. I'm so glad I bought the 3 spheres from him awhile ago. I have them hanging in my sewing room and I love them! Is it starting to sink in with him that he has done something extraordinary?

  2. Wow, does he use his fingers or some other nifty tool to make the creases? Think what he could do with modern surgeons tools...

  3. Marty,
I think at 13, one has little perspective on life. i bet when he is about 30 it will suddenly dawn on him the full extent of what a big deal this is.

    Vicky,
he gets asked that all the time. he uses nothing but his fingers. once or twice i have seen him grab a tooth pick for asistence. He also has the benefit of great eye sight.

  5. Judy,
I knew you weren't lying when you told us how small these were, but somehow, I still had difficulty believing it! Thanks for posting the picture, it makes it real for me. And, in the words of Paul McCartney, Baby, I'm Amazed!

  6. I just packed up some quilts to send to a show and I'm thinking I might have to switch to origami. My goodness, it would be so much eachiest to pack up a 3 mm crane! Amazing!

I'm 14 and my grandmother taught me how to make cranes when i was little. The smallest one i've made was 1cm head to tail, but i dont want to take it apart to measure the paper i used in the beginning. I think it was a little more than 3mm though haha =)

  11. WOW. You're son has major talent. But I'm sure you already know this. :) I just love love love this tiny crane inside a capsule. I realize this was posted about 3 years ago, but is there any chance I might be able to acquire one of these? I will gladly pay for it, as well as for shipping. Your son's origami art is about the coolest thing I've seen on the web in a while. He will definitely go far.

If it's at all possible to mail one to me, please let me know. nimes310(at)gmail(.)com

    Many thanks!
