Time for healing and support
I know my blog posts have been a little sporadic lately, I don't know about you, but it feels like there is a lot going on in my life right now. One of the things I have been preoccupied with is my friend Melly Testas health, I would love for all of you to keep her in your thoughts and prayers over the next few months as she goes through treatments for breast cancer. She is such a giving beautiful soul and I think giving back to her this way is the least we can do.
Now the latest Fiber Art for A Cause fundraiser One organized by Virginia Spiegal hits even closer to home for us fiber artists, with one of our nearest and dearest presently battling the disease herself.
It occurred to me, that the two mixed media fiber art pieces I made for the auction, now have so much more significance for me not only because my good friend Melly has cancer, but also because both of my collages have bird imagery on them and those of you who know Melly and are familiar with her work, know that she adores birds. This simple synchronicity warms my heart.
So please mark your calendar on Februry 16 to make a bid on a peice of artwork and contribute to this very worthy cause.

The Donations are coming in!
Here's an uplifting note in a time when we have felt so down about the economy. Fiber Art For A Cause is off to a fabulous start with two pieces sold on opening day and another two this morning.
Linda Teddlie Minton's artwork raised $1800, Rayna Gilman's - $1600, Marjorie DeQuincy's - $800 and mine - $450 for the fight against cancer. That's an incredible start to this fundraiser!
There are still artworks available by: Natalya Aikens, Gerrie Congdon, Carol Larson, Susie Monday, Leandra Spangler and Roxane Stoner
Tomorrow is the last day of the Reverse Auction and the minimum donation will drop by another third. Will the artwork you desire still be there???
Donations are made directly to the American Cancer Society with an immediate electronic receipt sent to donors. Thank you for your support of Fiberart For A Cause, fundraising for the American Cancer Society.

Fiberart For A Cause reverse auction Preview opens today
Fiberart For A Cause Reverse Auction Set to Raise Funds for the American Cancer Society
Fiberart For A Cause will hold its fifth Invitational Reverse Auction from March 24-26, 2009. The Preview opens today:
Natalya Aikens, Gerrie Congdon, Marjorie DeQuincy, Rayna Gillman, Carol Larson, Linda Teddlie Minton, Susie Monday, Judy Coates Perez, Leandra Spangler and Roxane Stoner have all donated their artwork.
All proceeds from the sales go directly to the American Cancer Society.
All artwork will begin at a fixed minimum donation. This minimum donation is reduced by a fixed (and very generous) percentage of the original minimum donation each day until the artwork is chosen by a generous patron.
“Having lost my husband to cancer nine years ago, I wanted to make some small contribution to something that is so close to my own heart, as well as a joyful way to remember my husband and other friends and relatives who have fought this disease. Since fiber art is both my vocation and my avocation, this seemed a perfect match for me. I was honored to be asked to contribute to the Invitational Reverse Auction, and delighted to accept,” said Linda Teddlie Minton.
Fiberart For A Cause has now donated more than $165,000 to the American Cancer Society in the last four years and was the second highest national fundraiser for the 2007 American Cancer Society Cancer’s Relay for Life.

Fiberart for a Cause
This is my donation piece for Virginia Spiegel's fund raiser Fiberart for a Cause. It is an Invitational Reverse Auction of Fiberart, March 24 - 26, 2009. Each artist donates a fiber artwork with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the American Cancer Society.
5 1/2” x 9 1/2”

To make this, I painted white PFD cotton fabric with textile paints, the letters were cut from magazines and collaged with gel medium. The finished painting was fused to Peltex heavy weight interfacing, and quilted. I cut the metal house shape from a sheet of aluminum craft metal with decorative scissors and used an x-acto to cut the window and doors. I used a 90/14 needle on my sewing machine to stitch the metal with a heavy cotton thread and embossed it after it was sewn to the panel.
I wanted to draw a more elaborate design on the metal than random doodles, so I drew a design on tracing paper and laid it over the metal and lightly traced over the design with a stylus transferring the design to the metal. I went over the design with the stylus embossing it in the metal giving it more depth and adding details.
