Quilting Arts Festival

Quilting Arts is going to have an online quilt festival with the help of the talented people over at Interweave May 29 - June 2. It is supposed to be like visiting a quilt festival from the comfort of home with vendors and classes. These are some of the things you will be able to do at the festival site:
  • Discover new quilting tips and techniques
  • Shop for the latest quilting, embellishment, and surface design supplies
  • Meet and chat with quilters from around the world
  • Take exclusive classes with top quilt artists
  • Win prizes every day!
While I was in Ohio taping the episode for Quilting Arts TV I filmed two classes for the festival. These will not be like your typical online classes with photos and pdf files to print out, they will be like watching an hour long instructional video on your computer.

From what I understand you sign up for class and can watch it as many times as you want for a couple months. You will also have an opportunity to chat with the teachers the week of the festival.
This was my view while filming except there were two guys manning the cameras; one for a wide shot and another for close up. Helen from Quilting Arts sat in the chair and held up signs to let me know how much time had passed. We had to stop a few times for technical things but otherwise the workshop was filmed straight through.

It is funny how things that never seem to happen in normal life, like flinging a bottle of paint through the air, seem to happen while you are being filmed.

My first class is painting fabric for whole cloth quilts. In this workshop I go through the steps of painting this little bird quilt:

My second class is mixed media painted fabric. It is a demonstration of the painting technique I used to paint the fabric for the bird houses in Cloth Paper Scissors and this tote bag.

Be sure to go over to the festival web page and put your name on the list to have information emailed to you for pre-registration.

  1. Thank you so much for posting this. Of course I had to go right over and sign up. This is great for those of us who can't travel for whatever reason. Thank again!

  2. This sounds really cool. As a tech-y person in my 9-5 day job, this appeals to me.

  4. I was reading your article in Cloth, Paper, Scissors about "Dream Houses" & I was unfamiliar with one of the materials PFD fabric - what is it?
Hopefully, you will see this & be able to give me the answer. Thanks!

  5. Jeannie,
PFD means prepared for dyeing, it is cotton fabric that does not have any sizing or finishes on it. You can buy this on line from several sources: Dharmatrading.com or silkconnection.com to name a few or you can wash cotton fabric in hot water with detergent to remove any sizing. The sizing can interfere with the paint bonding to the fabric surface.
