The beautiful math that links coral, crochet and hyperbolic geometry
Another fabulous Ted talk. I have a fascination with many scientific and mathematical ideas, although many times I have a hard time grasping the full concepts, none the less when there is an overlap of scientific and artistic ideas it so interesting. I am probably especially drawn to these kind of things because my dad was a Naval engineer and my mom is a research scientist. In my teens and early 20's, my mom worked at an aquaculture lab in Northern California and I spent a lot of time peering into salt water tanks filled with creatures from the Pacific. My favorite thing to do was help feed the baby lobsters and see them swim somersaults in their little cubicles.

I did find this interesting, but most of it went way over my head! I had to drop geometry in high school. The last TED I saw was Elizabeth Gilbert speaking about genius and maybe why we artists are so hard on ourselves. It was fabulous! Thanks for taking me in another direction I probably would have never thought about.
ReplyDeleteI had heard of this project before and seen some fabulous pictures, but this talk was gave that knowledge real meaning. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this very fascinating talk!
ReplyDeleteJudy, I am SO glad I saw this on your site. I posted about it May 1, 2009. It took me all morning, because I couldn't stop finding and reading links. I was very excited by it, amazed I had not heard of it sooner, and decided to become a member of TED so that I would get notice of all their talks IMMEDIATELY. Of course, Margaret Wertheim talked on TED quite a while after the fact of her Crochet Coral Reef, but time is so fluid on the Net. It's hilarious that we can get a comment from someone who is super excited about something that they read on a posting we made 3 years ago (or vice versa)!
