The Cicada House

My inspiration for the theme of this house came from an experience I had this summer.
The house is finished. It is 22 1/2" tall, 9" wide and 4" deep.
To construct it I made one inch wide strips with fusible web on the back. I used left over strips from my last painted project for the outside strips and I used the dark blue cotton matching the back side for inside. I fused a strip on the back first and then fused a strip on the outside while bending the edge to create a bent corner. Then I stitched along the edges. I added strips of metal to the roof, that had to be sewn on pretty early in the construction. Once the whole body of the house was put together, I bent the metal along the roof edges and used E600 to glue the top of the house to the metal edging.

The last thing I want to do is make a metal edge for the bottom of the house to finish it off.

It turned out really nice. My favorite part is being able to see teh cicadas on the inside -- it's a wonderful surprise.

  6. What a wonderful idea! The painting looks beautiful (like ever). I think that to develop the "flat" picture into a 3-D-project was a great solution. The metalic effects and also the painting of the cicadas are a real "eye-catcher".
I admire your style and your creations and read your blog very often. Wonderful!

  7. thanks, I have to say this was a fun departure from working flat (quilt) i really want to do more structures now. I like taking quilt elements and bringing them into some new hybrid form of art.

  8. Judy one of my local guilds had done a "Quilt outside the box" challenge and I saw the quilts hanging in the local library. Nice. But not not as "outside" as I would have expected. Your box is exactly what I was expecting to see. Thank you for sharing it!

  9. This turned out wonderfully! I can't imagine that is was an easy task sewing it together. The metal details are perfect and so 'you'.Taking the quilt into another dimension.

Rayna G. is looking for examples for a slide show about turning those pieces that just don't work into something that does. I bet she would love to include this one.
