My favorites are the illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian (the late 15th century), she lived and worked in a time when it was rare for a woman to have a career and travel alone to exotic destinations. Her paintings of insects and plants are just gorgeous. I love the colors and textures on her illustration of the caiman.

This book has such wonderful illustrations! There are several book featuring the work of Maria Silbylla, have you seen the book of flowers? there is also one about metamorphosis. Beautiful inspirations.
ReplyDeleteI have a black and white one of her flowers and I just saw there is a new biography on her, Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis. I think I may have to get it.
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled across your blog this morning... not sure how I got here, but oh my goodness! what wonderful stuff you have.
